2003 Hall of Fame Inductees FASTPITCH
Fran Luhtala

an all-conference athlete in both football and basketball at Sumner High, Luhtala spent 57 years playing and coaching in baseball and softball locally. At one time he played five games in two sports on one day. His wife told him, I married a sports event. She wasn't far from wrong. He starred at third base in baseball for Sumner A.C., the Puyallup Oilers, and South Prairie's Valley League Champions, McKinley Hill in the Tacoma City League, and the Puyallup Eagles, two-time state Eagle Champions. In fast pitch he starred on two Sumner City Championship teams, Sumner A.C.s Pierce County Champions, and five Tacoma teams, all winners of titles. His Irwin-Jones team won several Metro and Regional crowns, ditto for Wood Realty, and he was a three-time city champ for Spring Air, twice Industrial League champ with Reichhold, and city champion with West End Tavern. He also starred and coached in slowpitch for some 25 years with teams that won two regional championships, placed 16th nationally, and qualified for regionals on four other occasions. And twice he was a member of the Seattle City Champions. In 1998 he said good-by to competitive sports, assisting as coach for the Orting High School girls fast pitch team.
