Vern Morris
Born
June 7, 1925, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Vern Morris was a star
shortstop who could have played in the National Football League.
Morris graduated from Bellarmine Prep in 1943 and spent time at both
University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran College before
graduating in 1950. He played for several local semi-pro baseball
teams, including BB Washers, Bellarmine, and DLC, including one
squad that went to nationals. Following his playing career, he
coached Western State Hospital’s slowpitch team, winning a room full
of trophies, and also coached basketball at Western State. However,
it all could have been different – he was drafted by the Pittsburgh
Steelers.
