Otto Balmer
Otto Balmer was a standout baseball player and
coach in the South Puget Sound region. Born Dec. 30, 1930, in
Orting, he pitched and played shortstop at Orting High School prior
to graduating in 1949. He spent one year at Seattle University and
played for Wiesbaden AFB, as well as Orting, Spanaway and South
Prairie in the Valley League. Some of his teammates included Walt Bisig, Jack Voss, Chuck Cotter and Jack Wilkins
Balmer coached St. Regis to the Connie Mack
State Tournament in 1966 and headed up the Northwest Showman in the
Colt League from 1975-79. His squad won the first annual 16-under
Boys Baseball Tournament. He also coached Puyallup in the American
Legion in 1981.
While at Orting, Balmer also starred on the basketball court. He
earned first-team All-Pierce County League honors in 1948 and 1949
and honorable mention All-State in the 1949 Class B Tournament. |
