Gerarld Redburg
Gerald played high school
basketball and tennis, coached high school basketball and tennis,
but umpired softball and slow pitch for 19 years. Redburg had much
success in everything athletically and taught and coached 32 years
at Curtis High School after two years at North Thurston. He retired
in 1993 but not before compiling these lofty credentials.
At Yelm High School he was a two-year starter in basketball and his
teams won league honors and played in state championships both
years. He also was a three-year letterman in tennis. After
graduation from Pacific Lutheran, his tennis and basketball coaching
years at Curtis resulted in several state championship appearances,
highlighted in 1971 with an undefeated 26–0 hoop season and the
state’s AA title. Among his umpiring assignments he worked youth
leagues to high school and college games, regularly doing PLU and
UPS games. He umpired at American Legion State Tournaments and at
the Northwest Regional Fastpitch Championships at Sick’s Seattle
Stadium. Gerry was elected to the board of the Western Washington
Umpires Association prior to his retirement.
