Don Maitland was born in Orting, WA on 12-31-1929 and passed away on 2-17-2016 in Tacoma, WA.

He graduated from Stadium High School in 1948 and graduated from the College of Puget Sound in 1953 with a degree in Business Administration.

At Stadium Don was a three-year letterman in football, basketball and track. He competed in track for coach Bob Levinson, football for John Heinrick and basketball for V.G. Lowman and Bill Lemmon.

At CPS, Don was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and played varsity basketball for four years under John Heinrick who had become the CPS coach. Don was also a member of the Logger baseball team under coach Vern Kohout and there is an interesting story to be told about that team.

They kiddingly called themselves "the worst infield in Logger history" but they didn't live-up (or down) to that description. They were, in fact, contenders for Evergreen Conference honors until one fateful game against Western Washington in Bellingham.

With both teams having ace hurlers on the mound it was bound to be close. A run might win it. In the bottom of the first a leadoff line drive was squarely in the glove of third baseman Doug McArthur, then popped out for an error. The next batter hit a ground ball to shortstop Joe Stortini and it skidded through his legs for error #2. Second baseman Russ Wilkerson was next. He fielded a perfect double-play ball but his throw to Stortini Sailed into left left field for the 3rd error of the inning. Finally, first baseman Don Maitland settled under a pop fly but (you guessed it) it eluded him at the last second and that was the inning that was! No more runs scored that day but Western won the game by that 3-0 first inning score.

After his college days were over Don played for the 1948 Mueller-Harkins Buick baseball team in the City League and he also played for Ben's Truck Parts and for Joe Carman's Spring Air Mattress team that won the Puget Sound Fastpitch League during the 1956, 1957 and 1958 seasons. "Maits" also played on several local AAU basketball teams after graduation.

At the beginning of Don's freshman year at CPS he met and went on to marry Ruby, his wife of 65 years. He had a successful career of 45 years as an insurance agent with the New York Life Insurance Company.
