Recreation Department- Youth Softball A young girl came home from school and said, "Dad, you're not doing anything for girls!" And that is how the first girls softball league in the area came to be. Tom Cross, Director of the Pierce County Parks & Recreation Dept. took those words from his daughter Chris and turned them into a reality as the Fillie Softball League was formed in 1958 in cooperation with the Metropolitan Park District of the City of Tacoma. To further this joint effort between the two recreation agencies, the first team created was coached by staff members from each department- Cross from Pierce County and Steve Orfanos, Recreation Supervisor with the district. Games were played at Heidelberg Park and softball for girls continued to grow.
