The year 1938 was about half-way between the Great Depression Years and the WWII Years. Very few young men had the necessary funds to attend college so they took jobs to build up some cash before starting their families. They sought good physical, active recreation, and the Park Board assisted them by Forming softball leagues. There were four leagues: City League, Commercial League, Pro-Service-Vets League and Church-Fraternal League.
This Elks team belonged to the Pro-Service-Vets League which consisted of teams from the Elks, Bank of California, Young Mens Business Club, Red Men, Knights of Columbus and Active Club.
The Elks uniform had purple long pants and shirt with the Elks Emblem. On the back of the shirt was the name of a Tacoma business who was a sponsor. The batteries were pitcher Ted Goranson and catcher Ed Cartozian, and Harry Mounsey pitcher and Bill Wieking, catcher. John Rappin was the manager. The team was enthusiastic, but weren't as good athletes as some of the other teams and ended up near the bottom in league standings.
