COACHES

John Heinrick

In Tacoma everybody called him ³Coach². John Patrick Heinrick had a legendary 51-year coaching career spanning decades at Bellarmine and Stadium high schools, then the College of Puget Sound.

Football and basketball were sports where his school teams excelled but he was an outstanding baseball coach as well.

His 1937 Johnson Paint team placed 5th in the National Semi-Pro Tournament. He won more league championships than any prep coach in Tacoma history and his CPS football and basketball teams were perennial Evergreen Conference champions or runners-up.

His biggest win, perhaps, was a 48-41 CPS hoop victory over the University of Washington in the Tacoma Armory in 1948.

Because of Heinrick, there is a UPS Fieldhouse today.

Small wonder that he is a member of the NAIA Collegiate Hall of Fame.
