WEIGHT LIFTING / BODY BUILDING

Arnold Snell

Arnold Snell and Bryce Lilly opened the first weight lifting gym in Tacoma in 1948 called the Cascade Health Studio. It was open to both men and women and one of the first female participants, Clara Bowe, was the winner of the "Miss Washington" contest that year.

For his size (at the time, 175 lbs.), Arnold was one of the most powerful men in the world, according to Lilly. In 1948 no one of any size equalled his feat of performing 50 full, complete squats with 300 lbs - 50 repetitions! Bryce and Arnold used to give lifting exhibitions for civic groups and schools in Tacoma and Arnold would always finish the presentation by one-arm pressing a 220 lb man overhead to arms length.
